New Business Incentives in Place

Central City Mainstreet Business Improvement Committee is happy to announce that we have been the recipient of a $99,000 USDA grant to create a revolving loan fund and a $120,000 TIF grant from the City of Central City, $50,000 of which will be added to the revolving loan program.  The remainder of the funds will be used for a Façade Grant Program and promotional and branding activities for the community.

These grants will allow Central City to offer incentives for new businesses to locate here and opportunities for existing businesses to expand.  Anyone interested in learning more about these programs can E-Mail Eric Heims at City State Bank or contact City Administrator LaNeil McFadden at 319-438-1713.

Jara Pavlis is new Mainstreet Promotions Committee Chair

On September 21st, the Central City Mainstreet Board appointed Jara Pavlis to Chair of the Promotions committee.  Previously, Darlene Duckett held this position.  Darlene will remain active as a member of the Farmer's Market Committee.

Jara was on the original application committee and helped with the presentation that got Central City accepted into the Iowa Main Street Program. Since becoming a Mainstreet community, Jara has been an active member of the Organization Committee and editor of Mainstreet Magic, the Central City Mainstreet quarterly newsletter.

Jara is excited to get involved with the Promotions committee and looks forward to working with volunteers and businesses to promote Central City. For more information on the Promotions Committee, please visit our Mainstreet Volunteers page.

Historic District Signage Has Arrived

The long awaited historic signage planned for Central City has arrived.  Signs noting the Historic District in Central City’s downtown have been placed at two locations on Main Street.  Signs will also be placed in two sites on Fourth Street in the near future.

Two large signs will be placed on Highway 13 as soon as the final site is approved by the Department of Transportation.  These signs will direct travelers to the four exits into Central City.  The signs were a cooperative effort by the City of Central City, the Business Improvement Committee, and the Design Committee of Central City Mainstreet.  The signs were purchased from Prison Industries in Anamosa.

'Mainstreet Moolah' Gift Certificates Now Available

Before you know it, fall will be behind us, and it will be time to begin thinking about the busy Christmas season. Instead of fighting the mad rush of shoppers at the mall or discount store, why not take care of your gift giving right here in Central City!

Just stop in at the Mainstreet office and purchase your Mainstreet Moolah gift certificates!  Mainstreet Moolah can be purchased in $5 and $10 increments and spent at any Central City business. Please contact the Mainstreet office at 438-1761 if you have any questions.

The first flock of flamingos arrived September 1st and are still coming!  Could they land in your front yard - or did you play it safe and purchase "Flamingo Insurance" to guarantee that they don't come in to roost?  Maybe you have someone's yard in mind where you would like a flock to land?

Call the Mainstreet office at 438-1761 to purchase your flamingo insurance for $15, schedule a flocking (12 birds for $15 or the SUPER FLOCK of 24 birds for $25) - or if you have any questions.

And if you are a flocking victim, don't worry, flocks will roost in yards for no longer than 48 hours.  If a flocking victim wishes to remove a flock sooner than that, a team of expert de-flockers can be hired to remove the birds for $10.  Boomerang insurance can also be purchased for $20 to teach people a lesson for trying to flock you - if someone tries to send a flock to your yard, it will instead decide to roost in THEIR yard!

Flamingo Flocking is a Mainstreet fundraiser brought to you by the Organization Committee.

The Mainstreet Organization Committee is holding a Christmas Quilt Raffle as a year-long Mainstreet fundraiser. The beautiful donated quilt (pictured to the right) will be on display at various community activities throughout the year and on display at the Mainstreet Office in between these activities.

This 61'x84" log-cabin quilt was completed by several women belonging to a quilter's guild. Some of the blocks are even signed by the makers, and include signatures from Ohio, California and Arkansas, to name a few. The name of the lucky winner will be drawn at the Holiday on Main event this winter.  You do not need to be present to win.
